November/December 1998 issue

The November/December 1998 issue of the Medical Sentinel, the official journal of the Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS), features, among its informative articles, an extended editorial by Editor-in-Chief, Miguel A. Faria, Jr., M.D. entitled, "Patient Privacy and Confidentiality" which is a must-read for both physicians and patients.

Dr. Faria cites the Oath of Hippocrates to support the inviolability of patient privacy within a sacrosanct patient-doctor relationship, a relationship based on benevolence and trust that should be on equal footing with the attorney-client privilege. He makes the case that the government in collaboration with certain elements in organized medicine is set to violate our privacy for their own nefarious purposes - with the establishment of electronic data collection, medical databases, and the assignment of patient and provider identifiers. Dr. Faria denounces the lack of safeguards in this flagrant invasion of privacy and states it is "time to draw the line," urging physicians to seize this opportunity to reaffirm their willingness to stand by their patients, defending their privacy and medical record confidentiality - as they are sworn to do by the ethics and Oath of Hippocrates.
